The Dot Activity

 


Description: In class, we listened to the book "The Dot." This book would be good to read with students at the beginning of the year because it can show them that you can make art with just one dot. Even if you do not believe you are good at art. It would also show them that even if they do not think they are good at art, they should still try because they might surprise themselves with what they can create.  

In addition to reading the book, we worked on creating dot projects with different materials. The project on top was created on a piece of paper. The materials used were oil pastels, crayons, and watercolors. The project below was created with a coffee filter. I used several materials, including crayons, markers, watercolors, and oil pastels. These projects would be good to show students which materials are water absorbent and which ones are not.



Extension Activity: An extension activity for this project would be to still read the students the book, but after, they would create a project as a class and individually. As a class, they would make a big "window" project, and each student would make their own section with dots. They would individually use paint with soap to blow paint bubbles onto paper and create different dots on the paper when the bubbles pop.

Student Lesson 4 - Print Making

  Description:  In this lesson, we learned about Andy Warhol and different types of printmaking. Andy Warhol was a famous printmaker. To start the project, we drew out the design on a piece of paper; we all picked a design that meant something to us. I chose a sunflower because they are so pretty, and we also grow a lot of them on our farm; I also wrote "Be Happy" because I think trying to be happy and kind is important, and sunflowers make me happy. We had to be careful if we wanted to write words because they would have to write backward. Once we finished our design, we traced/carved it onto a foam sheet. Then came the printmaking. We got to try printmaking four times with the design we carved into the foam sheet. We started by covering our design in the paint and rolling it out, and then we pressed it onto our sheets; I think my second and third attempts turned out the best.  Extension Activity: I would incorporate this into a Language Arts lesson and have the students...

Hidden Safari

  Description: During this activity, we learned about upsidedown drawing. We also discussed how things can be hidden inside of an image. We used a light blue color to draw an animal of our choice upsidedown on the paper. The animals we all drew were animals that could be found on a safari because we discussed safari animals in class. After we finished drawing our animals we then used warm colors to draw over it; we used a different shape or pattern for each warm color so the animal would be hidden. We then wrote clues about our hidden animals on the paper to help people try to identify the animal. We then looked at our drawings with our red glasses that block out the warm colors to see our hidden safari animal. Extension Activity: I really liked this activity and how it taught students to look at things a different way and allowed them to learn a new skill by drawing their animals upside down.
