Elements of Art and Principles of Design

Element of Art: Texture

I choose this picture for texture because you can see a lot of texture on the tree bark in the picture. I choose to take a photo of a tree to represent texture because you can see many different textures on a tree, and everyone has touched a tree, so it is a texture people can relate to. Texture describes an actual surface's feel and the surface quality of an object; it can be real or implied. The real texture is the texture you can actually feel, whereas implied texture is when something is made to look like it has a texture. This picture was taken of a tree in my backyard.

Element of Art: Space

I choose this picture to represent the element of space because it shows the depth of space in the picture. Space in art refers to a feeling of depth or three-dimensions. Space can refer to the area within, above, around, or below an object in a work of art. This picture was taken looking out my plane window on the way to Arizona.

Element of Art: Value

I choose this picture to represent value because there are both the highest and lowest color values in this photo. The highest value of white is at the top of the picture in the sky by the clouds, and the darkest value is in the trees in the background of the picture. Value in art refers to how light or dark a color or hue in a work of art is. This picture was taken along a gravel road by my house.

Principles of Design: Emphasis

I choose this picture to show the emphasis because the emphasis in this picture is on the cross in the center of the photo. The cross is emphasized because it is the focal point of the photo and the things around it almost frame it, like how the clouds separate around it. Emphasis is when an object is the focal point of an image or work of art. Emphasis is used to attract the viewer's attention to a particular area or object in the work of art. This photo was taken at the site of an old church in a pasture by our farm.

Elements of Art: Color

I choose this photo to represent the principle of color because it has many colors in it because there are greens and blues at the bottom of the photo, and it gets lighter as you move higher in the picture until you see the yellow and orange in the sky. Color is the element of art produced when light, striking an object, is reflected in the eye. Color consists of three properties, and they are hue, intensity, and value. This picture was taken of a river by my house.
